When Desk Work and Reality Connect.

Hi everyone, I’m Maimouna Ndao, Senior Associate in Finance and Operations at HOT's Open Mapping Hub for the West and Northern Africa region.

As we continue to grow and strengthen the Open Mapping Hub, I have been reflecting on the important role that Finance and Operations play in supporting HOT’s mission and, ultimately, the communities we work with.

One of the most meaningful experiences I had in the field was in Orefonde, which is in the northeastern part of Senegal. This project, where HOT collaborated with TOSTAN and OpenStreetMap Senegal, was meant to improve local planning and development through accurate and accessible data. For me, though, it was an opportunity to see how our behind-the-scenes operations merged with realities on the ground and to see how we can be most attentive to the needs and perspectives of the communities we serve.

Through this initiative, local authorities, partners, and experts came together to improve the visibility of infrastructure and better understand the needs of local communities. Being part of this process reminded me that behind every project, budget, and operational process, there is a project, a team, and ultimately a community.

Finance and Operations may sometimes seem far removed from the communities benefiting from our work, but the quality of our processes directly affects our ability to deliver meaningful impact. When resources are well planned, managed, and monitored, teams are better equipped to focus on what matters most: supporting communities and strengthening their ability to use open mapping and data for their own priorities.

Good financial management includes strengthening budget preparation and monitoring, improving financial visibility for projects, supporting partners with clear and effective processes, and ensuring that our systems can adapt to HOT’s growing needs and evolving organizational model.

I've truly come to see operations as an important partner to other teams, not simply a control function, but a function that can provide timely information, identify risks and opportunities, and help teams make informed decisions.

Looking ahead

As we move forward, I am excited to see how Finance and Operations at the Hub contributes more and more to the development of the communities in the region and how it could continue to support HOT’s mission.

There is still a lot to build, improve, and learn from one another. I hope we can continue strengthening our systems while keeping the bigger picture in mind: ensuring that the resources entrusted to HOT translate into meaningful and sustainable impact for communities.
